Day 5: High Bentham North Yorkshire (90 miles / 451 total miles)

A great day cycling through my home county of Lancashire. It was like Le Tour de France with crowds out to see LeJog pass by (well my mum, dad & sister). Too far to deviate to St. Helens we stopped for coffee as we passed through Leigh. Clean washing was taken onboard and banana stocks replenished.

The morning’s light shower caused my chain & gears to squeak badly as we climbed out of the Lancashire plain. Quite concerned we stopped at Ewood Cycles in Blackburn and asked for help announcing I was doing LeJog. Without any hesitation Ian said ‘bring in your bike’ followed by ‘it’s a lovely bike, shame you don’t know how to look after it’. Suitably admonished the chain was lubricated & the gears tweaked. Jason reckons if I was in the army I’d be on a charge for neglecting equipment. The last 12 miles from Slaidburn to High Bentham had the toughest climb so far but once on top of the moors it was spectacular. Arriving at Mewith House B&B we received a genuinely warm welcome from Felicity & Graham. Dinner of homemade steak pie and summer pudding rounded of the day perfectly. We couldn’t manage the gooseberry pie so taking a slice tomorrow.
